The intruder

I. hate. this. lamp.

Well, hate is really a strong word. I don't like this lamp. This lamp does not like me. No one should like this lamp. My husband on the other hand, loves this lamp. B found it at Goodwill (apparently someone else did not like this lamp) a couple of months ago and it has been sitting, shadeless, in our spare bedroom.

Yesterday, he bought a new lampshade for another lamp in the apartment so this monstrosity could have the other lamp's lampshade and be moved to the table on his side of the bed.

He turned and said to me: "See, it has a shade now."
To which I replied, "That doesn't make it any less ugly."
B came back with, "Someday, this lamp will save your life. Someday, there might be an intruder and this lamp will be the first thing you pick up to defend yourself."

I think the lamp is the intruder.

Anyway, I'm putting it up for a vote. Who likes this lamp?

Wait, let me rephrase. Who likes this lamp enough that you would want to have it sitting on the night stand next to your bed, next to the picture of your gorgeous wife on her wedding day, and across the room from your really beautiful dresser?

Anyone?

I actually like the lamp... I am so sorry Gayle, but it must be the creative in me. I vote to keep the lamp. Besides, it looks so perfectly placed with the magazines, glasses and other expected accoutrement for a nightstand. :) Amy

Some people in the world have no lamps. I think we should all be thankful for any lamps we have. Where would we be with no lamps in the world? I'll tell you. Humankind is like a group of shipwrecked sailors on a raft (with no lamp) in a vast sea at night. There is darkness all around (still lampless). In the storm of life, one by one they fall off into the dark waters and disappear (becuase with no lamp, the others cannot see to help). When the last human falls off, the sea will roll on and the holes made by their bodies in the water will be covered over in the dark.

The amoeba drifting on the border between light and dark turns inevitably towrd the light.

Gayle, I can certainly understand your feelings about the lamp but I have to say it does suit Bryan. I hesitate to say more for fear you might think it a good "present" for a wonderful aunt. Maybe it will get knocked off the table and break when it is being dusted. Bryan, does this count as a vote for or against the lamp? linda

Sorry Bryan, I'm with Gayle on this one. U-G-L-Y. Thre are simply no better words. I fear that the photo is making the lamp look better than it actually does (lighting). Also, a point to ponder—if you're trying to set a "mood" for your bride this might not be the best way to go about it. : ) Katherine

Sorry Gayle, but I think I have to vote with Bryan on this one. The lamp looks really good there. And I checked out the dresser, and the two look good together given how vintage they both are. Now everyone is voting from a picture (that may make the lamp look great and its not in-person?) of just the lamp and not the entire room. But from what I can see it looks nice, suits Bryan to a T!!

Well...I'm gonna have to say down with the lamp! I think one of my old (wake and bake) frat bro's had one quite similar to it next to his Bob Marley banner and his 3 chamber Graphix bong. Though joyous and colorful in it's presentation, I personally would put a rifle slug right through that sucker!
